Latex is a plastic material that originates from the sap of rubber, but it can also be synthesized artificially. It is used for the manufacture of latex medical gloves, because it is very resistant, flexible and can be widely stretched before breaking.
The different kinds of medical latex gloves:

Latex gloves are the most widely used medical and surgical gloves in the medical environment, laboratories and when handling toxic chemicals. It was Henri Chaput (surgeon) who introduced them to the medical world for the first time in France in 1901. They are resistant and elastic and they offer a feeling of touch close to natural. They are recommended for specific gestures requiring dexterity. For people allergic to latex, you can use:


    • Nitrile gloves when the protection against chemical attack needs to be higher. These gloves are equivalent to latex gloves, they will give you the same level of protection, but without the allergen.

    • Vinyl gloves, on the other hand, should not be used during chemical risks, as it offers less protection. Indeed, the vinyl material is less elastic and is damaged more quickly than nitrile or latex. There are also an alternative for people with latex allergy. Vinyl is not used in very precise gestures because it does not exactly transmit the sensation of touch, or for intensive long-term use.


The advantage of these two types of gloves is that fewer users are allergic to them and they are still fairly resistant to cuts and punctures. Gloves for medical examinations are for single use only and should therefore be discarded after each use. Whatever their material, they are available in powdered and non-powdered formats. Putting on a powdered glove is easier, and its feeling of comfort is increased. They are more economical to buy than powder-free gloves, because it is the most manufactured format.


Powder-free latex gloves are used by people allergic to the powder. They are easy to put on and provide a feeling of comfort equal to powdered gloves.
Recommendations for the proper use of latex gloves:

Latex gloves for medical examinations are the most used in the health and medical sector. The latex content of a glove varies from one manufacturer to another. Gloves are a good means of prevention against daily soiling in the medical environment, it has become essential in the execution of various treatments. Because it allows the user to have a dermal protection and for the patients they are used for asepsis purpose, because they are for single use. You still have to make sure that your box of latex gloves meets European standards (EN 455: disposable medical gloves, ASTM-F 23.70.02: gloves that comply with “bacteriophage bio-penetration” tests). Powdered latex gloves or Hartmann powder-free latex gloves should be used in any treatment procedure which causes contact with the blood or mucous membranes. For proper use of gloves you must respect certain rules:


    • Choose the type of gloves according to the risk to which you will be exposed.

    • Choose the right size so that your hands are really safe and your feelings are the best possible.

    • Check that the gloves have no defects.

    • You should not wear jewelry on the fingers and that your nails are not too long or that could pierce your gloves.

    • Put on gloves on clean, dry hands. Indeed, if wearing gloves is essential, this should not, however, replace hand washing. Because 70% to 80% of infections are transmitted by hands.

    • If your gloves get damaged during an intervention, you must change them immediately.

    • If you have been in contact with dangerous products, you should take off your gloves very carefully to avoid direct contact with your skin.

    • Wash your hands before and after you wear gloves.

    • Avoid storing gloves out of their box.

    • Gloves should be disposed of in an appropriate container directly after use.
