Amiri
The son of Iranian immigrants, Mike Amiri Pusa was born in Beverly Hills, California in 1976. As a teenager, he was heavily influenced by the rockstars of his childhood—bands like Guns N’ Roses and Mötley Crüe—and the distressed clothes they wore.
Mike Amiri’s path to success as a fashion designer was an unusual one. The Amiri brand’s story begins with its founder’s involvement with Korean hip hop group, Drunken Tiger. The group was one of the first Korean hip hop acts to achieve commercial success, which opened the door for future K-pop acts who have since gone on to become global phenomena. These successes would later play an essential role in spreading the vision of Amiri.
Following this period, Amiri came back to the US and became a design consultant for various brands in Los Angeles where he learned the ins and outs of the business. In 2014, he felt the need to branch out and flex his creative muscles with a passion project. Starting out in the basement of a restaurant in Los Angeles with a pattern cutter he met via a classified ad, Amiri began to make clothing and post pictures of it on Instagram. The caption of one of his earliest posts reads “Just making this for no reason at all. No sales, no editors, no stores in mind. I just want to make something special.”
After making enough clothing to fill a rack, Amiri realized he had a store in mind: Maxfield. The legendary L.A. boutique, known for carrying designers from all over the world was exactly where Amiri hoped to position his brand. After a brief meeting with the store’s buyer, he was in. As the brand began to take off, fan favorites became signature items within the shop.
The fabric that tells the story of Amiri best is denim. As California’s ties to denim are well known, Amiri made it a point to bring the denim production back to its original home. The MX1 jeans are individually measured, cut and patched with details like hand pleated patches, similar to those found on motorcycle pants. The Track Jeans are treated with similar care, and the stripes running along the side helped the brand capitalize on the “side stripe” trend while staying true to its denim roots. The Bandana Buckle Boots are a clear example of exactly how much of an impact ’80s rock bands had on Amiri.
The brand’s rockstar look soon attracted the attention of actual rockstars (and pop stars and rappers). It wasn’t long before Justin Bieber, Kanye West and K-pop band BTS, were seen in Amiri. Amiri experienced a full circle moment when he was chosen to outfit Guns N’ Roses for tour.
Although Amiri has said he doesn’t seek the approval of fashion’s old guard, it came in the form of a CFDA nomination all the same. With the business growing and sales numbers steadily increasing, it will be interesting to see what the already accomplished Amiri will achieve in the coming years.

Bape
In 1990, Fujiwara and graphic designer Shinichiro "Sk8thing" Nakamura founded Goodenough, a sportswear brand. By 1993, Goodenough had grown large enough to warrant a retail location, and Fujiwara commissioned NIGO and NIGO's college friend Jun Takahashi to manage it. Nowhere was a small boutique in the then quiet Ura-Harajuku neighborhood split into two sections: Takahashi's punk-influenced Undercover on one side and streetwear selections imported from NIGO on the other. Takahashi's store side was an instant hit while NIGO underperformed.
NIGO realized that in order for his section to perform as well as Takahashi's, he had to start his own label. Sk8thing came up with the concept after a series of primate-related inspirations hit him. Binging all the Planet of the Apes movies resulted in the now iconic Ape Head graphic. Underground comic artist Takashi Nemoto's lullaby Bureiko Bureiko gave birth to the phrase "A Bathing Ape In Lukewarm Water", which was later abbreviated to "A Bathing Ape" and eventually "BAPE". Sk8thing added another essential piece to the BAPE puzzle: the camouflage pattern. BAPE's most recognizable design, the camouflage pattern incorporates the Ape Head graphic and has been a staple of the brand from the start, being used on everything from hoodies to accessories.
BAPE began to launch products the same way many streetwear brands do today, with very limited drops and very expensive pieces. For years, they've partnered with Japanese hip-hop groups and created touring products, simultaneously linking his name to hip-hop and making themselves known in a multitude of places. By the end of the 90s, BAPE was a hugely successful brand with its American dealers constantly selling products. While many streetwear brands would do their best to fend off the possible explosion in popularity that the BAPE was on the verge of, NIGO welcomed it. He signed a deal with Pepsi, wrapping his soda can in the iconic BAPE camouflage pattern, quickly expanding the brand's reach.
The BAPE was more successful during the 2000s as America's most popular rappers began to embrace the brand. Pharrell admired NIGO in the same way that NIGO idolized Fujiwara, often wearing and promoting the BAPE. Other BAPE fans include Lil Wayne, Clipse, and many more. Sadly, the good times ended in 2009 when NIGO stepped down as CEO. The company had lost a large amount of money and was forced to sell a 90% stake in the business to I.T. Group, which now controls it.

It quickly acquired an international dimension. She also moved to London in 1902 and then to New York City seven years later. Cartier has a long history of selling to royalty and celebrities. The brand is well known for its exceptional jewelry and watches such as the “Bestiary”, the diamonds worn by Liz Taylor or the first wristwatch from 1904, the “Santos”. Cartier's reputation is linked to the quality of its know-how, but is also a pioneer in watchmaking. From the first years of the twentieth century, modern pieces in bright colors with stylized and geometric shapes, a forerunner of what will be Art Deco, appeared. In the 1910s, the "Panther" motif became the emblem of the house. Chanel
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel was born in 1883 in Saumur, France into a modest family. In 1910, she opened her first store in Paris, Chanel Modes, where she made hats. After her hats became a favorite of Gabrielle Dorziat, one of France's most famous actresses, the business took off. Chanel landed gold again in 1913 by opening a boutique in Deaville and showcasing women's sportswear. The clothes empowered women in a way that was unlike anything that came before them and turned out to be an immediate hit. Now that she had imposed herself for five years equipping the women of France with popular items, Chanel opened her first fashion house in 1915.
While Chanel has made several iconic products over the course of its century-old history, its most popular item is its debut fragrance: Chanel No. 5, released in 1921. The fragrance was created by Ernest Beaux and it was the fifth fragrance presented to Gabrielle Chanel, hence the name. Almost a hundred years later, Chanel No. 5 remains one of the best-selling women's fragrances in the world. Barely five years later, Chanel created another icon: the “little black dress”. In an era when dresses were loud and colorful, the subtlety of the little black dress felt like an act of rebellion. The dress was meant to appeal to the widest possible market and it achieved just that, garnering comparisons to Ford's iconic Model T.
It was not until 1978 that Chanel launched its ready-to-wear collection and began to distribute its accessories around the world. In 1983, 12 years after the death of Gabrielle Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld was appointed artistic director. Under Lagerfeld, the brand expanded its offering to include sneakers, sunglasses and a wider variety of bags.
After Lagerfeld's death in 2019, Virginie Viard, director of the Chanel studio and Lagerfeld liner, took her place as artistic director. It is under her that the legacy of one of the most influential fashion houses continues to flourish.

Vlone
These days, a rapper expanding his portfolio and starting a clothing brand is pretty much expected. It’s like a right of passage each artist gets once they reach a certain number of fans. Lucky for A$AP Rocky, he wasn’t alone once it was his turn to establish a label of his own. Along with A$AP Bari and CLOT’s Edison Chen, VLONE was born.
VLONE takes its name from the phrase “you live alone, you die alone” and its spelling from the A$AP typeface of turning ‘A’s’ to ‘V’s’. Although A$AP Bari has said the brand started in 2011, the brand’s rollout was particularly slow, coming to a head in 2014, when VLONE was seen in an A$AP Rocky music video. At the time, VLONE offered only T-shirts and hoodies but shortly after the video's release, the brand debuted a sportswear collection during Paris Fashion Week at a pop-up shop. Within hours, the collection sold out and VLONE was a proven success.
VLONE had its first and only runway show for its Spring/Summer 2018 collection. The collection, “Black History”, was VLONE’s first attempt at cut and sew pieces as the collection included leather pants and outerwear. The main takeaway from the show, however, was the VLONE x Nike Air Force 1 Highs sent down the runway. There are also Air Force 1s, composed of black leather with orange lettering, featuring the brand’s tagline “Every Living Creative Dies Alone.” While the Highs would eventually see an extremely limited release of only 20 pairs, the sneakers did signal the Nike collaboration that was to come. VLONE has also done collaborations with other big names such as Off-White and Palm Angels.
Who started VLONE?
The founder of VLONE is A$AP Bari.
Is VLONE the same brand as Off-White?
No, they are two different brands.
